The why behind affirmations for Toddlers & Kids
Working with affirmations in my own personal life, and knowing that thoughts and words are powerful, I thought why not start teaching my son this? I truly believe that toddlers are little sponges and more capable of learning than we even can comprehend as parents. Read more about my perspective on how toddlerhood is a beautiful journey of challenges and incredible memories, in my NOT so terrible two’s in this blog post. In this blog post I talk about meditation as a tool to guide the energy of being two. This age is so special and so beautiful. There is so much light and beauty in their eyes. They are eager to learn and they learn so quickly. Children deserve the opportunity to learn and be themselves and learn tools like affirmations for toddlers.
How to Start to Teach Affirmations
To preface teaching our son affirmations, we first started by implementing a calming nightly routine. Please note that this routine is never perfect, and never turns out in order because, toddlerhood lol. But providing a routine for bedtime has been helpful for our son and our lifestyle. But this is not a requirement to teach your toddler affirmations.
Toddler Nighttime Routine
Our night time routine starts with quiet time in our son’s room where we do a combination of the below:
- Read Books Together
- Do a few stretches/yoga cards
- Get on a fresh diaper and pajamas, plus brush teeth, wash hands, etc.
- Sit in a circle and talk about what we are grateful for from the day
- Hold hands and take 3-5 deep breathes together
- Say our little prayer/affirmation
Teaching Affirmations for Toddlers
Okay, finally getting to the affirmations for kids and toddlers. The nightly ritual we made up and continue to do daily is the reason I decided to teach my son affirmations. With how incredibly smart he is (and how incredibly smart and capable ALL two years old are), I decided that there was no reason why affirmations could not be the next thing we try out. So we did, and the smile on his face when doing them brings me so much joy.
Building Affirmations
Building affirmations for kids and toddlers is no different than building then for adults. I use the “I am” approach. Here are the simple ones we do with our son.
- I am smart
- I am amazing
- I am beautiful
- I am creative
- I am safe
- I am strong
- I am healthy
- I am grateful
- I am loved
- I am at peace
When my son gets older we will work on affirmations that start with “my” and are longer winded. Plus we will expand on the “I am” affirmations to make them longer. But for now, the simple ones work great. To me these affirmations are so important because they reaffirm to ourselves as human beings who we are and what we are capable of. They have guided me on my journey of healing and self love, and I want my son to have them in his tool box.
Nighttime routines and rituals are unique and special to each family. In sharing ours, it is not to persuade you into thinking that the things we do are superior because they are not. They are what work best for our family.
Words are powerful. They can bring you down, or they can build you up. Teaching our little ones affirmations is a positive experience that we can enjoy as parents too.
